Book review: "Main Street: The Lost Dream of Route 66"

A great many photography books about Route 66 over the years have been imbued with the gauze of 1950s nostalgia and hyper-saturated color. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Edward Keating's "Main Street: The Lost Dream of Route 66," consciously or not, serves as the antithesis of those books and likely will prove polarizing among Route 66 advocates.

The suit, filed in federal court, cites 17 crossings, including the Oak Street bridge along Route 66. The city is asking the court to find Union Pacific responsible for maintenance and impose fines for its "failure and refusal" to repair the crossings. The suit cites city ordinances that were adopted in the 1880s and 1890s, when the rails were built, that mandate the rail companies maintain the crossings at their own expense.

Traveling While Black' Guidebooks May Be Out of Print, But Still Resonate Today

Modeled after the international advisories issued by the U.S. State Department, the NAACP statement cautioned travelers of color about the "looming danger" of discrimination, harassment and violence at the hands of Missouri law enforcement, businesses and citizens. The civil rights organization's action had been partly prompted by the state legislature's passage of what the NAACP called a "Jim Crow bill," which increased the burden of proof on those bringing lawsuits alleging racial or other forms of discrimination.

More

This fall, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago presents West by Midwest, an exhibition tracing how artists with ties to the Midwest helped shape art and culture on the West Coast where they migrated to find career opportunities, art schools, and warmer weather. Spanning the early 1960s to 2010s, works by artists such as Billy Al Bengston, Andrea Bowers, Judy Chicago, Anna Halprin, David Hammons, Mike Kelley, Senga Nengudi, Laura Owens, Sterling Ruby, and Ed Ruscha among many others, demonstrate the ways that contemporary art practices spread and developed across social and geographic lines.

Almanac: Route 66

November 11, 1926, 92 years ago today, was the day highway officials green-lighted plans for the future Route 66. Completed in 1928, U.S. Route 66 started in Chicago, and stretched west more than 2,400 miles across the great southwest to Los Angeles. In the 1930s, refugees from the Oklahoma "Dust Bowl" followed it to begin new lives in California, prompting John Steinbeck to christen it "The Mother Road" in "The Grapes of Wrath."

Albuquerque repeals anti-cruising ordinance
