2018 cost-share grants for Route 66 sites announced

The Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program on Wednesday announced it awarded seven cost-share grants totaling about $87,000 for preservation or historical research. Since 2001, the program has awarded 146 cost-share grants totaling $2.17 million.

Illinois governor hits several Route 66 sites during motorcycle tour

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner led a parade Sunday of hundreds of motorcycles to four Route 66 sites to celebrate the state's bicentennial. According to the Herald-News in Joliet, Rauner and 300 to 500 other riders made stops at the Launching Pad Drive-In in Wilmington, the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac, Kelly's on 66 restaurant in Lexington and The Mill in Lincoln.

Rock Creek Bridge near Sapulpa closed to vehicular traffic

The historic Rock Creek Bridge west of Sapulpa, Oklahoma, closed to traffic for the second time in five years after flunking an inspection. The Route 66 Alliance, based in nearby Tulsa, stated on its Facebook page Tuesday the bridge will stay open to pedestrians, however, as an engineering firm figures out what to do next.

Pinnell wins GOP nomination for lieutenant governor

Matt Pinnell, a longtime Republican Party politico, beat Corporation Commissioner Dana Murphy in the runoff election on Tuesday for lieutenant governor. Pinnell received 171,575 votes, 58 percent, while Murphy got 123,557 votes, 42 percent, according to complete but unofficial results.

Vinita wins $25,000 to help enhance its downtown

Victorville throws support behind Route 66's 'historic trail' designation

The City Council unanimously threw its support this week behind designating Route 66 as a National Historic Trail, which could offer new sources of funding for preservation and promotion of the 2,400-mile stretch of road. The U.S. Senate is currently considering the bill introduced by Republican Illinois Rep. Darin LaHood that would amend the National Trails System Act and make the designation official.

Volunteers have been working to clean and clear the Old Joliet Prison yard in preparation for its first public event behind the wall on Aug. 25. "It's never too late to mend" is etched in stone in the floor in the segregation unit of the Old Joliet Prison Even though the prison closed 16 years ago and has been plagued by vandals and arsonists, there is now an enthusiastic effort underway to mend it and give it a repurposed life, befitting its heritage, its connection to the Blues Brothers and Route 66. Spearheaded by the Joliet Area Historical Museum, the city of Joliet, and the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce, there has been an "explosion of volunteers" at the Collins Street site every Saturday for the past several months, the museum's executive director Greg Peerbolte said.

66,000 signatures sought for Route 66 National Historic Trail petition

The Route 66 Road Ahead Partnership and the National Trust for Historic Preservation this week announced a goal of 66,000 signatures for a petition supporting the designation of Route 66 as a National Historic Trail. The groups stated in a news released they want to meet that goal by Nov. 11, which is the widely acknowledged birthday of Route 66. On Nov. 11, 1926, the American Association of State Highway Officials formally adopted the 2,448-mile path from Chicago to Los Angeles and number of U.S. Highway 66. Route 66 supporters and travel enthusiasts may sign the petition to designate Route 66 a National Historic Trail at www.preserveroute66.org .

Director from Spain films new documentary about Route 66's living icons

A director from Spain praised for her work in short films and digital media has shot a full-length documentary about the living icons of Route 66 and hopes to see the movie in theaters by 2019. Ana Ramon Rubio directed "Almost Ghosts," which is designed to "remember those who were forgotten when the U.S. Government finished the construction of the freeways that bypassed what was, until then, the Main Street of America," according to a news release.

When my sister Catherine and I walked into the agricultural section of Elk City, Oklahoma's Route 66 Museum last fall, the docent said, "Welcome to the Broomcorn Capital of the United States!" A little Googling indicated that four additional areas claimed Broomcorn Capital status: Wichita, Kansas., Arcola, Illinois, Lindsay, Oklahome and Baca County, Colorado. However, we Bee County farm residents in the mid-20th century had reason to believe Beeville was the capital.

Driver not charged in crash that killed two German cyclists on Route 66

A county prosecutor declined to file charges against a woman who accidentally drove her van into two German cyclists on Route 66 near Galena, Kansas, killing them. On May 8, Heinz Gerd Buchel, 71, and Harry Jung, 74, of Germany were riding their bicycles west in the right lane of Kansas Highway 66 about two miles west of Galena.

No charges in 2 German cyclists' deaths on historic Route 66

No criminal charges will be filed against the driver who struck and killed two German cyclists in Kansas while they rode on the historic Route 66 during a cross-country trip. The Joplin Globe reports that Cherokee County Attorney Jacob Conard wrote in a letter released Monday that there's no evidence the 23-year-old driver from Shawnee, Kansas, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or operating her minivan in a "reckless or dangerous manner" before she struck the two from behind in May. Seventy-four-year-old Harry Jung and 71-year-old Heinz Gerd Buchel died at the scene, just north of the Oklahoma state line.

Architect sought for Red Cedar Inn project in Pacific

The city of Pacific, Missouri, has begun a search for an architect who can renovate the long-closed Red Cedar Inn restaurant along Route 66 and transform it into a local history and welcome center. The city has published a request for qualifications through newspapers and the American Institute of Architects St. Louis Chapter to begin the search for a renovation design expert.

Euclid Avenue in downtown Ontario will get temporary street makeover

The clock tower at the Ontario Town Square was celebrated today at the kickoff of Route 66 Cruisin' Reunion. The city and Southern California Association of Governments are inviting the public to find out during a free festival from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Ontario Town Square, 224 N. Euclid Ave. The "Re-Imagine Downtown" event, part of SCAG's Go Human campaign, will temporarily make over Euclid Avenue with various street design elements that could be implemented through the citys Active Transportation Program, such as a separated bike lane, a parklet and curb extensions to make the historic street safer for people walking and biking.

Angels on the Route operators resurface in nearby Galena

The operators of the closed Angels on the Route restaurant on Route 66 in Baxter Springs, Kansas, have resurfaced at an upcoming restaurant in nearby Galena, Kansas - also on Route 66. On Monday, Alan and Cheri McCarney will open Sugar Creek Diner & Bakery at 300 W. Seventh St. in Galena, they announced in a Facebook post . The restaurant sits about eight miles northeast of their earlier site.

University Lodge in Albuquerque plans big transformation

The historic University Lodge in Albuquerque eventually will be transformed into a boutique hotel, including retail spaces and a rooftop brewery and restaurant. According to a story in Albuquerque Business First , the University Lodge at 3711 Central Ave. will be rebranded as a "chic" and "retro" Avenue Motel, Sharamin Dharas told the newspaper.

The century-old Cucamonga Service Station along Route 66 in Rancho Cucamonga, California, recently was designated to the National Register of Historic Places. The listing to the National Register was effective July 23, according to an email Friday from the National Park Service.

Illinois plans to celebrate 100th anniversary of Route 66

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Tuesday creating the Illinois Route 66 Centennial Commission, which will make plans to celebrate the road's 100th anniversary in 2026. Rauner says Illinois has "a distinct place of honor" in the history of Route 66 - also known as The Mother Road - which starts in Chicago and travels to California.
