Mitchell Caverns started as Depression-era attraction

His caves were in the middle of nowhere at the end of a 22-mile dirt road from the rustic hamlet of Essex on Route 66 in the eastern Mojave Desert. Endowed with lots of positive thinking, he felt he could convince adventure seekers to come there during the depths of the Great Depression despite the 200-plus-mile trek from the Inland Empire and beyond.
