Sheverb's new video shot partly on Route 66

An all-female band based in Austin with a terrifically descriptive name, Sheverb , recently released a new music video that partially was shot on Route 66. In a news release, Sheverb stated the video was shot at Classical Gas, the petroliana museum in Embudo, New Mexico, owned by longtime Route 66 advocate Johnnie Meier. The video also includes scenery along Route 66. The band also played in venues in Albuquerque and Amarillo, including the historic Golden Light Cantina in the latter.

Two senators introduce Route 66 National Historic Trail legislation

Carthage sues railroad over crossings, including Whee Bridge

The city of Carthage, Missouri, is suing the Union Pacific Railroad for failing to keep up crossings and bridges in the city, including the fabled Whee Bridge along Route 66. The suit, filed in federal court, cites 17 crossings, including the Oak Street bridge along Route 66. The city is asking the court to find Union Pacific responsible for maintenance and impose fines for its "failure and refusal" to repair the crossings. The suit cites city ordinances that were adopted in the 1880s and 1890s, when the rails were built, that mandate the rail companies maintain the crossings at their own expense.

Nursing-home residents go to Route 66 car museum

Residents of the Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County in Illinois recently visited the Midwest Classics on 66 Museum in Wilmington that Mike Bell of Perth, Australia, and Jeff Hubrich of the Joliet and Wilmington area opened in July. The Daily Southtown reported the visit was such a hit for residents who participated, the nursing home will do it again: Sunny Hill Activities Director Danette Krieger said the nursing home held a car show in the parking lot at the county-owned nursing home on Aug. 18 and "we realized that we have a lot of car buffs living here and the residents, especially the men, loved spending time by the old cars and reminiscing about their own automobiles and fast cars they have driven in the past."

November 11, 1926, 92 years ago today, was the day highway officials green-lighted plans for the future Route 66. Completed in 1928, U.S. Route 66 started in Chicago, and stretched west more than 2,400 miles across the great southwest to Los Angeles. In the 1930s, refugees from the Oklahoma "Dust Bowl" followed it to begin new lives in California, prompting John Steinbeck to christen it "The Mother Road" in "The Grapes of Wrath."

The Albuquerque city council this week unanimously repealed a 2005 cruising ordinance, allowing Route 66 enthusiasts to take a slow journey down Central Avenue in their classic cars without flouting the law. According to the Albuquerque Journal , the task force found the 2005 Cruising on Public Streets ordinance were redundant in light of a 1994 irresponsible-driving ordinance: The 1994 ordinance already contains prohibitions against irresponsible behaviors such as drag racing; excessively loud electronic sound or music; modification of exhaust systems; stopping, standing or parking near hazardous or congested places; and occupying roadways, certain medians and roadside areas.
