Gasconade River Bridge makes Missouri Places in Peril list

The closed Gasconade River Bridge near Hazelgreen, Missouri, on Friday was named to the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation 's historic Places in Peril list for 2018. The bridge also was placed on the list in 2015, when the state in late 2014 closed the bridge due to structural deterioration.

Sapulpa faces 90-day deadline to repair Rock Creek Bridge

Some bad news and good news were reported this week about the historic Rock Creek Bridge on an old alignment of Route 66 west of Sapulpa, Oklahoma. First, the bad news: The city must repair an erosion problem on the bridge's east side within 90 days, or else the bridge will be closed permanently, according to Fox 23 in nearby Tulsa.

"Almost Ghosts" Route 66 documentary premieres Wednesday in Spain

"Almost Ghosts," a documentary filmed by Ana Ramon Rubio in March along Route 66, will premiere at the Seminci Film Festival in Spain on Wednesday. Among those featured in the film are Harley Russell of the Sandhills Curiosity Shoppe in Erick, Oklahoma.

Earl's Motor Court in Winslow changes hands

Earl's Motor Court, a longtime fixture along Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona, changed owners this summer, but little else will change at the motel itself. Angela Archibeque said during a phone interview Sunday she and her boyfriend Blas Sanchez, both Winslow natives, bought the motel for $190,000 in July after its longtime matriarch, Floranel Earl, died in February.

Northeast Oklahoma residents raise poultry operation concern

The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture Food and Forestry suspended permits earlier this month for new and expanding broiler chicken farms in the state. Flagstaff consider beautification ideas along Route 66

Flagstaff, Arizona, and its beautification and public art commission is considering a variety of elements to beautify its stretch of historic Route 66. Mark Di Lucido, community design and redevelopment administrator for the city, told the newspaper the city is considering a more naturalist look to nearby Williams, Arizona. What isn't ambiguous is the style these signs would take and Di Lucido said they want them to be unique to Flagstaff.

Artists create life-sized plastic whale in San Francisco

Artists are putting the finishing touches on an 82-foot-long blue whale made from discarded plastic that will be on display near San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to raise awareness about ocean pollution. The Monterey Bay Aquarium said Friday a blue whale can weigh 300,000 pounds - about the amount of plastic scientists say enters the ocean every nine minutes.

Longtime operator of Monterey Motel in Albuquerque dies

Norman Bugg, who operated the Monterey Motel along Route 66 in Albuquerque for 25 years, died Sunday of heart failure. He was 89. The Albuquerque Journal , which reported Bugg's death Monday, said he refurbished and remodeled an aging motel into Triple Diamond-rated lodging.
