The Iconic Road Trip

No matter if it's a haphazard first adventure with college buddies or a post-retirement planned escape onto the open road, there are few better and more liberating sensations than pointing your RV towards the horizon, putting your foot down, and seeing where the tarmac takes you. And from all the road trips I've taken on four of the seven continents, I still firmly believe the US and Canada offers the best.

British man to attempt record for cycling Route 66

An award-winning cyclist from Great Britain in September will try to set a world record by cycling nearly 2,500 miles of Route 66 in just 11 days. Pav Bryan is training for the journey now.

Mel's Drive-In opens at Route 66 western terminus

The newest site of Mel's Drive-In restaurant opened Tuesday, and it happens to be at the official western terminus of Route 66 in Santa Monica, California. The iconic 1950s-themed restaurant already has locations at Sherman Oaks, Hollywood, West Hollywood and Los Angeles, and countless movies and television shows were shot there.

These are the USA's 11 most endangered historic places

Route 66, multiple states: Known as America's "Mother Road," Route 66 is an internationally significant symbol of our nation's romance with the open road. While Congress has taken important steps to designate Route 66 a permanent National Historic Trail, which would bring national recognition and economic development to the route's historic sites, legislation must be passed by the U.S. Senate and signed by the president before the end of 2018.

Route 66, Larimer Square on National Trust's endangered list

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is identifying 11 places around the U.S. that it says are at risk because of development or neglect. The National Trust list, released Tuesday, includes Route 66, African-American historic sites in Connecticut and Mississippi, and Denver's Larimer Square.

Disney transforms California Adventure's Paradise Pier into the 'tapas'-like experience of Pixar Pier

What was once Paradise Pier is now Pixar Pier, taking the Victorian theme of the last refurbishment and giving it a Pixar makeover. The early days of Disney's California Adventure theme park next door to Disneyland boasted a number of peculiar design choices: a paparazzi-themed family ride, a coaster alluding to reckless drivers on Mulholland Drive and an extreme sports story line to its rafting ride.

Look out for black bears along Route 66

If you travel Route 66, you need to stay aware of possibly hitting wild animals on the highway - deer, turtles, snakes, coyotes and even antelope and elk in the western states. Earlier this week, a motorist on Route 66 west of Cuba, Missouri, hit a black bear.

A West Michigan father is planning to ride across the country in honor of his late son, with hopes to raise money and awareness to one day find a cure for pediatric cancer. Mark Linder says he plans to ride nearly 2,500 miles on his bike and he is doing it with his late son Kevin in mind.

Employees at the Canyon 66 Restaurant and Lounge at the financially troubled Ramada Kingman in Kingman, Arizona, saw their paychecks bounce again this past week. Marina Brown, a former server at Canyon 66, said she worked there until this week and was issued paychecks that can't be cashed, including her tips.

New Route 66 signs unveiled in Amarillo

State and local officials on Wednesday unveiled a series of new Route 66 signs in Amarillo, Texas, after the state legislature passed a bill that designated Route 66 as an official historic corridor. Illinois launches Route 66 motorcycle plate program

Illinois motorcycle owners now can join car owners in the Land of Lincoln by registering for an Route 66 license plate. Bill Kelly, executive director of the Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway, observed that "Illinois residents that ride will now be able to enjoy a distinctive Route 66 Motorcycle Plate that also provides funding to support preservation and promotion of this legendary highway in our state."

Signage slated for Amarillo parking garage retail space

Temporary vinyl signage will soon be installed on the windows of vacant retail spaces within the city owned downtown parking garage on Buchanan Street. The Amarillo Local Government Corporation Board has voted to approve a $14,000 bid for a firm to conduct a survey of the windows, execute the design and layout of the images, print the materials and provide installation.
